Hi everyone,

While returning to my car after a day of bird photography, I noticed the crescent Moon and Venus growing closer together in the darkening sky. I decided to head to the nearest area that would provide relatively little light pollution. I crossed my fingers that they would in fact align and be in a photogenic position. To my delight, when I arrived at my shooting location along BC's Howe Sound, not only the Moon and Venus, but Mars as well, were perfectly aligned next to Anvil Island - just what I'd hoped for! I later found out that this alignment hasn't happened since September 2008 and won't happen again until 2017.

Calm, cloudless, winter nights are few and far between in this part of the world. I was very lucky to be able to photograph this spectacle with 765m Leading Peak reflecting on this normally very choppy water.

This is a composite of two exposures taken back-to-back; one for the overall scene and another to retain the detail visible to the eye on the surface of the Moon. I'm still quite a novice when it comes to night photography but I liked how this one turned out. I'd love to hear what you think!

Best of luck,

Cool idea to use the distorted reflection as an additional point of interest.
A great photograph is absorbed by the eyes and stored in the heart.

Neat...even better viewed against a dark b/g.

Definitely better against a dark background. Well done.

Hi Jess, you nailed the comp of course and I always admire your creativity. For me though, the double exposure with the moon isn't working as well as I'd hope. Probably because I'm a photographer, but it just seems off. Perhaps playing with the reflection so that it also appeared to have some detail might make it more believable. As is, with the moon darker than the reflection of the moon, it seems a bit weird!
