May 9th, 2011 was a stormy day along the southern Utah/northern Arizona border, but especially in Monument Valley. The weather front produced massive cloud systems and strong winds. For a few brief minutes during sunrise a hole opened for the suns rays to pour through and I was lucky enough to be there.

Nikon D2x body, 24-120mm lens at 28mm, F16 at 1/80 second, ISO 100, tripod. Raw image processed in ACR.

One of the most powerful and dramatic shots of this location I've seen. Epic.

Really neat rays, nice silhouettes of the mittens.

Very nice! Love the sun rays bursting through the clouds, contrasting with the beautiful silhouette of the mittens.

Perfect placement of the sun in the cradle of the mittens. Dramatic result.

Fantastic mittens shot. I think toning down the signature would make it a lot less distracting while still providing protection.

We all know the signature and copyright symbol provide no protection at all. It is simply their to advertise my website. A few years ago I had a 3"x4" by 72dpi image (45kb) copied off my website (bull elk silhouette) that had my copyright imbedded, and a visual signature stamp similar to this - and saw it on a huge billboard along I-15 in Salt Lake City. They scaled it up to about 8 feet by 12 feet to advertise a mountain building development. Nice. There comes a time when you realize that if people want to steal your images they will - and there is nothing you can do to stop them. However, you can make them pay when caught. A letter from my lawyer threatening a copyright lawsuit in federal court was all it took for them to pay me 10x what I would have charged them legally. My philosophy now is I'd rather share my images and advertise my business - and not worry about the bottom feeders of society.

But ya, a lighter gray signature would have been less distracting.
