The mature flower buds of the prickly pear cactus generally open around dawn and remain open until they are in shadow or darkness. They bloom for a single day and then wither away. I imagined them collecting sunlight during the day and then casting a glow of that stored light, illuminating buds that have yet to have their day in the sun.
This shot was taken one late morning in late June in full sun. Extensive post-processing was necessary to achieve this effect. Len Romanick
