A pair of hooded mergansers turn to land. Mostly done with the filter gallery in Photoshop and blending modes. The sketch part was done with Topaz Simplify and by hand, but it could be done with glowing edges and blending in the filter gallery also.

Really appealing effects here Jerry, I like the delicate tones and painting quality of this pair and their formation flying. The little female reminds me somewhat of a seahorse, but the image as a whole is quite lovely especially when viewed with the darker surround.

Where it can be done, I have my desktop background a darker neutral gray for the editing program.
The original photo only had one in focus for the 500mm lens. Now if I could only get them to fly by close enough for my wide angle lens with a great DOF :D

Yes, I know what you mean Jerry!  That is one of the many challenges that I love about wildlife photography - you can't pose them like you can people!  :D

Very creative way to show these cuties- love those Hoodies-can't wait for their return. We do have a few that overwinter, but they shoudn't have stayed this year!

A few stay here, but usually do not cooperate. Or they fly by so fast it is hard to get a shot. This was taken a few days ago at -3 below. I was sitting by a spot of open water that had not froze yet. My small odds of getting a shot were increased slightly since most water near by was frozen.

Beautiful pair of mergansers performing an aerial ballet -- lovely treatment.
