It looks like the population of Mexican Gray Wolves is increasing a bit:

For those who don't believe that politics play a critical role in how species recover, here is an article for you. Ted Turner has done a lot to help with the Mexican Gray Wolves and Black-footed Ferrets, but ranchers have been vocal and the political appointees are just puppets. Asking the person who appoints them for help in obtaining a permit is never going to accomplish anything!!!!!

Thanks Joe for posting the article...interesting dynamics of this subspecies, our NW wolves weigh between 100 and 150 lbs. (male) and the recovery numbers are 77 divided into 9 packs and 6 new pairs (Oregon).  Are the M. wolf only using mountain islands or do they disperse across the desert regions?

The Mexican wolves are mostly in the forested areas, but these areas are intermixed with desert, so there is no reason that they can't be found in the desert. They are between the SW corner of NM and the SE corner of AZ. The forest offers more large prey animals. There were, and I believe still are, funds to reimburse the ranchers for their losses, but they are vocal and propagandize the dangers to their children and livestock. I have previously posted about them building "wolf-proof" school bus stops in that region. The squeaky wheels are getting the grease, to the detriment of an endangered species. The largest state university in NM (UNM) has the Lobo (Mexican Gray Wolf) as its' mascot, but the wolf is not being treated fairly all!

Thank you for this post Joe....great news:

1.  My buddy is taking his nephew out West for a month.  The itinerary includes stops at some of the "big name" natural landmarks, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Sequoia...etc..   I mentioned that very area you are talking about Joe....because of the mountain lions and wolves.  Does it have a large elk/mule deer population?  It is at the top of my list.  I want to ride it with a mountain bike and a dog.  Is that allowed I wonder ?

2.  Yes, I saw that "wolf-proof" school bus stop thing.  Fear tactics.  Ridiculous. Unfair.  Lies.  That's ok...the truth is coming out more and more.

3.  And California has the California grizzly on its flag.  But they don't brag today about the days when they had a bounty on them.

4.  Interesting fact in the following first link:  There is a movement to reintroduce the grizzly to northern California.

Another article on Ted Turner's efforts and the loss of the permit he held for the past 17 years:

https://www.yahoo.com/tv/s/ted-turner-r ... 33506.html

Robert, regarding the elk and deer, there are a fairly large number of elk in the area. There are a number of deer, but not in great quantity. I have seen the diminutive Coues Whitetail in that area. They are the most beautiful of all the deer I have seen.Lions are hard to find and very secretive. Most of the area is open to biking and dogs are allowed on a leash (I think 6 feet long max).

In a strong move by the Feds, Mexican Gray Wolves will be released in NM in direct opposition to the NM Game Commisions ignorant decision to not give them a permit:

Then another federal agency, Wildlife services, will come in and kill them...stating children's safety was at stake.
