I have gone on winter pelagic boat trips off Hatteras a few times and this story is disheartening as most of the species named are ones I have enjoyed photographing.

Interesting article...on the west coast (Oregon), nesting Puffins have dropped markedly as well as other birds. No theories explain everything, but has coincided with the new fish meal, protein supplements that are driving the fisheries. The fish used are the bait fish (anchovies and sardines)and may account for the starvation of the pelagic sea birds. By the way, the Oregon NWR (along the Oregon coast, the nations largest) do not allow any human disturbance except at one southern Oregon coast spot.
