Spring is in the air and the Western Grebes are at it again.
The term for this courtship dance is called rushing.
This is one from last weekend. I hope you like it.

Thanks for the comment Carol! I appreciate it.
I forgot to mention clicking on the image for a larger more detailed view so thanks for doing that also.
It would be nice if the full size image was displayed without being compressed and shown as the image was intended to be seen.
Do you think everyone clicks on the images if they are not informed to do so??  A question for anyone that has a thought about this.
Thanks

Fabulous shot David. Love your choice of settings. The depth of field was enough to catch both birds nice and sharp and the ISO allowed for quick shutter speed( i guess 800iso is nothing for the 1DX). I often fall victim to leaving my settings in a safe mode, so i probably would have ended up with just one bird in focus. Killer!
Thanks for looking,

David, the best I've seen of this behavior. Wish it was mine.

Thanks so much guys. I'm really glad you like the frame. Seeing this behavior is a thrill everytime I get the chance to witness it.
The sound of them rushing is awesome in the calm of the early morning

Mike,
I learned from shooting these guys last year that unless they are coming right at you, which isn't to often, they will never be in the same focal plane because they rush side by side .
On this trip I started at my typical "safe" settings,(f6.3@1/4000th and ISO640) but realized pretty quick, by zooming in and looking close at the the cameras LCD, that the birds in the back weren't totally sharp.
The birds are so white when they jump up, especially in the sunlight, that I could stop down quite a bit and still keep up the shutter speed that I wanted to freeze the action. I was stoked when I got home to find that most everything I shot at f8 - f10 kept the bird in the back in focus!
Yes, ISO 800 with a 1DX is no problem. I could have gone higher, especially with a varied BG and lots of water flying all around but keeping my ISO low is one of my sticklers.
Thanks for your comment

Amazing, David. I also appreciate all the techniques you are kind enough to share as it helps me learn from the best.

I typically click to the uncompressed image as I find it is often much sharper. And for members, much bigger!

Best,

Matt

Great image of this spectacle David.
I am in totally agreement with you on the need to click an image to get the best view. We shouldn't have to do that on this forum IMO.

This photo is absolutely stunning. (I click on them automatically if I'm intrigued in the first place. This one was a no brainer). Though I would rather not have to, I don't find it particularly laborious to click twice.
