I've spent some time the past week searching for these birds after sunset with great luck. A wooded area just two minutes from home in central MA seems to have quite a few of them, including this beautiful brown morph which I found on Monday. My encounters are usually very brief as they seem to disperse into other areas to hunt for the night.

1D4, 300 f/2.8L IS, 2x TC III, 1/250 @ f/11, ISO 400, 430EX II in manual, removed a mess of branches above the birds head.

Thanks for looking, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Great work Josh,, the image is sharp and the slight BG adds depth..
I too find many in my area here in New York.. A tip, try finding their roosts during the day. Wait for really cold days of winter when its sunny and drive the roads in the area, checking both roadside cavities and into the forest with binoculars.. generally the roadside birds can be quite tame and wont retreat back into the hole / cavity. These birds love sunning themselves and scanning small woodlots in suburban areas or noting probable cavities will eventually find you a bird that in some cases will be there for several years.. Good luck

Such a nice looking Owl. Love the intense look and the erect ear tufts.
