Sorry for posting so many images of this bird but I can't help taking advantage of this situation while it lasts.  Yesterday it began hunting way earlier than usual - 1 1/2 hours before sunset. This gave me great techs but unfortunately it didn't fly very close to me.
I have spent fruitless years trying to get images of these owls and now I seem to have hit a bonanza. Not complaining mind you!

For not flying close to you, this photo doesn't appear to be a large crop.

You might try adding a 1.4x and upping the ISO to 800, so you could still shoot at 1/3200th next time, assuming the bird starts flying as early.

Keep taking advantage of this situation; I've never had one of these flying in anything other than early morning gloom, and even that has been seldom.

You sure are getting some nice shots of this bird! Nice light and background. Make hay while the sun shines or something like that. :)

Bob, don't apologize. Some of us will never get the opportunity to see this spectacular bird. You are so fortunate and enjoy every second of your photographic journey with this guy. This image is peaceful and beautiful.

Very Beautiful image, the grass over done in post-processing(PP)? if not apology, if yes check the below link :)
The in-focus grass can give a lovely feel for the image.

Would love to hear your opinion here. Take care!

One minor doubt, why manual focus, I thought 7DM2 and 500mm F4 combination can do autofocus quite efficiently.
unless you had 2xTC which slows down auto focus.

"manual exposure" not manual focus

This was cropped fairly significantly. There was some tall OOF grass in the foreground  but to leave it in would have required less of a crop and a pretty small image of the bird. The grass you see is distant and therefore  blurred. No PP tricks other than noise reduction. I do agree that some foreground grass would have been nice.
Thanks

Not exactly. It is a few miles south of the Skagit. Also I don't think it is a "guy" but rather a "gal". It has a rather dark rusty colored breast / belly which is more indicative of a female. There might actually be two of them there but I have only seen one at a time. Yesterday it was a no show.
