A bird most often encountered sitting conspicuously on fence posts in the grasslands of Alberta, i was pleased to shoot this one down in the native grasses on the prairies. I had actually turned down an oil well access road where i heard a spragues pipit calling. When i opened the door to the car this bird flew right in almost as if it came in to the door ajar warning sound.

Great find, I like the alert pose, soft light and eye contact.

Beautiful image of this species I've yet to encounter.

Really nice, Mike. Was admiring the prairie bird shots on your site recently - you did really well out there!

So cool. This and Red phalarope are the only North American breeding shorebirds that I haven't photographed so I am in insanely jealous. Good move to get one on the ground rather than on a post!
