D800e*600 mm man foc*f/8*1/160*iso 160

April South Texas

Normally skittish bird. One evening, this one landed by my feet. Had to back up a few steps to attain minimum focus. Surprised that he held the pose.

Really cool shot Todd. By the sounds of it you wouldn't have had the time needed to switch settings. I would have recommended a higher ISO to attain a quicker shutter speed(resulting in a sharper image). I keep my D800 at a default setting of 400 ISO while hiking around. Cheers
Thanks for looking,

Really nice, Todd. Great species and nice BG. You did very well given the circumstances you describe.

Best,

Matt

Great looking pose and colors Todd but the IQ isn't up to your usual standards. I agree with Mike on the ISO. ISO 400 on this body would be the minimum for most situations I would think. I almost never go below ISO 500 on my Canon 1DX to keep my shutter speed up, and I shoot in bright light allot. Nice species.

I took another look with fresh eyes. It's not very good, and poor in the white. I think that it's over flashed...so maybe I can at least help teach people what NOT to do. Agree that the bird struck a lovely pose. As to the iso, read a convincing article about Nikons (specifically) and noise that suggested multiples of 160(160, 320, 640 etc.,) to reduce and I was playing around with it. Decided on 640...a little too late. I truly thank you folks for your time and trouble. Thoughtful, constructive, and helpful criticisms.

Nice species to get Todd, as Matt said, great under the circumstances.
