We watched sibling young Common Terns for several days. They would climb to the top of a small sand dune face the wind and flap their wings.
On the third morning, the oldest of the two actually took off (much to it's surprise, I think) only to face plant into the sand a few yards down the beach. Nikon D4s, 500mm + 1.4 TC, F8, SS 1/2000, ISO 2200 Stan
