I posted a pair of these over a year ago. They are one of my favourite birds found in the temperate highlands. They are one of those elusive birds that weave in and out of the forest searching for food. They participate in bird waves that sweep through the forest mutually disturbing insects for each others benefit.

Canon EOS1DX 500mm f4, 1.4 ext, f8, 1/125sec, ISO 800, tripod.

Speechless...almost. Personally, the kind of shot I strive for and have yet to achieve. Lighting on bird and very natural perch brighter than bg because there's a little less shade. (Diffused catchlight suggests lack of flash). Detail suggests a fairly small crop.(Even in the red)...and a wary bird. Easily in my top 5 favs since I've joined this site.

Superb image.  I might be tempted to crop a bit from the right and the top but this is a spectacular capture of such a gorgeous bird.  Congrats.

Another perfect image. What a beautiful bird! I'd also be tempted to crop a bit from the right and move the head towards mid-frame.

What a cool-looking species, I also like the mossy perch and eye contact.

Graeme, what an eye candy bird and image, wonderful pose, great-looking perch and a darker BG that makes your subject pop.  The thing that is arresting is the anticipatory look on the bird's face, which keeps me looking.  Gorgeous frame.

Very nice! Dark BG really helps to make this shot pop. Perch is fantastic!

Wow Graeme. I can see why this is one of your favourites! It is a stunning bird! The details in both the bird and the moss are exquisite and the dark background is a plus too.
