Great Curassow

When this large female suddenly appeared from the dense vegetation in the Arenal - some 10 feet away - there was nothing I could do with the 500mm attached but watch her in owe! I had never heard of this turkey-sized bird when she emerged & watching her rear-end it seemed she would just vanish into the forest again but not before giving me that 2 second look over her shoulder... (Arenal - Costa Rica - 03/05/2012)

Canon 1DMK3 + EF500mm f/4 L IS USM.
1/800's @ f/4,0, ISO250.

Looks like you made the best of the situation. Cool looking bird, nice detail in the head.

It must have got your attention suddenly appearing. I like the head detail and that is where the shot lies. I would prefer not to have a large chunk of the bird...and indeed the frame out of focus. Great subject though.

Loving this shot. It breaks from usual conventions in good ways. The OOF back feathers are so cool. I just saw my first one of these at Arenal 11 days ago. Didn't get a shot this nice, that's for sure!
