I have worked with a pair of White-throated Kingfishers in my favourite photography spot for several years in season. This pair are more trusting of a stranger in a vehicle than most. I have envisioned a shot I would like to get but there are a number of elements that must align to get that shot;
1. Good light....for action shots I needed full sun and a clear day
2. A cooperative bird.......this included the condition of the bird. At the start of the season the Kingfishers are in prime condition. Later after nesting not so much.
3. Good, accessible low perch....this has been discussed
4. Smooth background...I use a 1.4x extender to blur the background
5. The right action in line with the camera. (sometimes when the bird has its back to you it hides the action). You also need a good machine-gun mode on your camera and a high-speed card.

I wanted the back view shot because the feather colour is so nice

Earlier this season I had alignment and the beautiful female. Give this female some lipstick and Jimmy Choo shoes and she would make the cover of Vogue.

Superb shot Graeme! Seems to be a lot of work behind this shot and it sure paid of. I like the perch, nice smoth BG, good light. Superb detail and frozen action. The prey and the open beak takes it to the top. If anything I wish for a bit more head turn

Superb action shot, Graeme. Probably the best or one of the best of this species ever.

It's all been said. Spectacular indeed. Even the frog with one foot out of the beak adds a special touch. Nice to know you can get such an amazing shot from an SUV.

Spectacular action shot. It's nice to know such things are possible from the window of an SUV.

Awesome, Graeme!
Excellent timing and the frog facing the camera tops it.
