I posted a Coppersmith Barbet adult removing a dead chick from the nest. This image is a much happier one showing the healthy sibling about to partake in a fruit overload.
Some species although they may be nectar eaters, when adults I note feed the chicks insects or grubs to get instant protein. Adult Coppersmith mainly eat fruit and I noted that there was no insects in the food baskets coming into the nest. There were at least 3 adults feeding the nest and they all came from the same direction where there was a fruiting 'Bhudda' tree. These are sparrow-sized birds and I guess the nesting cycle starts when a suitable nearby large tree starts fruiting. The chick was a reluctant fledger a few weeks later and first the parents tried to entice it out by not feeding it then they adopted a straight-forward approach and extracted it like a dentist pulling a tooth. I guess it felt safe there, The nest hole was in the middle of the city in a busy  and noisy lane.

Exquisite detail and what a stunning image Graeme!  So perfectly done it has an almost 3D effect as though they are about to burst out of my screen.

I love your fascinating facts on this little family and I now have an image in my head of the chick being popped out like a champagne cork!  :D

Graeme your detailed description is much appreciated and helps us to understand this bird and its behaviours. I am so happy to see this beautiful interaction and happy shot, after seeing your earlier post. Technically it is spot on, and emotionally it is a huge thumbs up!

Not only is the image, color and presentation exquisite, but, as a biologist, I much appreciate your dialogue on your detailed observations. It is obvious you appreciate nature much more than just a great image.

Stunning image, Graeme.
So three adults feeding this chick? Are they a species that has helpers, maybe their own offspring from last year?
