Having starved and pecked their younger sibling to death, these Great Egret chicks can't figure out how to dispose of the body. They kept unsuccessfully trying to dump it out of the nest. The parents just ignored the dead chick.
This is a pretty common occurrence with Great Egret chicks. The third hatched has little chance making it past the first month or so as the older siblings out muscle it for food and try to crowd it out of the nest. As the chick weakens the parents stop feeding it. D4s, 400mm, f8, 1/2500, ISO 1600. Stan
