Having starved and pecked their younger sibling to death, these Great Egret chicks can't figure out how to dispose of the body. They kept unsuccessfully trying to dump it out of the nest. The parents just ignored the dead chick.
This is a pretty common occurrence with Great Egret chicks. The third hatched has little chance making it past the first month or so as the older siblings out muscle it for food and try to crowd it out of the nest. As the chick weakens the parents stop feeding it.

There are several species that do this, good behaviour capture - it really is the survival of the fittest Stan!  I'm glad I am close to my siblings..........  8)

This is a similar vein to something I posted recently..nature in the raw and for some not pleasant viewing but it is what is and shows behaviour. I really like it and the background story you provide. Technically very good too with the whites well exposed and good composition.
I was a bigger second child and could defend myself too but was pecked a bit!!!!

Cheers
