I posted this image on BPN and learned some interesting fact about this bird from Marina Scarr who is a moderator and a Naturalist by trade.
The Pileated Woodpeckers excavate tree holes before they decide which one to be used for nesting. She is not sure as to which one of the couple chooses the nesting hole, but I have a hint that it's the female.
I watched them in 2009 extensively and saw the male chiseling the hole out and the female would come and inspect it thoroughly inside and out and then fly away with the male for the honeymoon.
