Harlequin Duck
Histrionicus histrionicus
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
Canon 5DM3 | Canon 400mm f/5.6 | 1/1250th | f/8 | ISO 640
Hi everyone,

I recently spent about a week in Victoria, BC. I was mainly there to lead photography workshops at the Royal BC Museum as part of their ongoing Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit. Afterwards, I took a few days to do some of my own shooting around the southern part of Vancouver Island. Was treated to a couple sessions along the city's waterfront with gorgeous lighting and water conditions. I was quite pleased with this frame as they're generally a shy species. I sat waist deep between two boulders for an hour or so and this beauty and his mate swam within range just before sunset. Gotta love male Harlequins!

Best wishes,

Great low angle, light and exposure control, Jess! Definitely one of my favorite duck species, too.

Nice one Jess. Typically around Victoria, this species is not very shy at all. if you can get out in a kayak they are very approachable; more so than most other species.
