Not fond of the BG.  Next time will open up a bit.
(And maybe darken the snow a bit on top of the perch ?)

Nice shot, I don't mind the BG, This has a relatively wide range of brightness from the snow to the black feathers, filling the histogram up, I would suggest a light s curve to give the midtones a little more punch.

Very nice shot of probably my favorite woodpecker species. I love the pose he gave you with the full side profile visible. I agree with others about the background, I don't think it's too distracting. The snowy perch is interesting as well. Overall I think the image would improve from cropping more off the bottom and leaving more room on the top left.
