This is from a late afternoon session last April at my favorite pond when the Avocets were in full breeding plumage. The Avocets feed by walking and sweeping their beaks from side to side... I hope this image gives a sense of that behavior.

D800 | Nikon 500 f/4 AF-S D ~ 500mm 1/2500s f/8 ISO 400 ~ Beanbag on the ground screwed into lens foot.

All C&C are greatly encouraged and most appreciated. Thanks for looking at what I love to do.

Very nice Kirk, like the stream of water wrapping round the bird's neck, good light and colours in the water as well.

Fantastic, Kirk. My favorite species to photograph at our local refuge in the warm season. Love the water action and how low you got.

I love getting shots like this of these beautiful males in breeding plumage. The water around the neck is totally cool and the colors of the bird and the BG are fantastic. Great work Kirk.

Beautiful colors. And yes, the splashing water shows the action.

Great late-day lighting, detail in the feathers and isolation of the subject. I like the squint as the bird splashes - gives the bird personality.

Awesome image. Love how the subject is isolated and at a low angle. No distracting BG - nice and soft.
Beautiful.
