It is interesting following the Bee-eaters nesting cycle. When they first arrive they feed mainly on bees and small insects.
As the chicks grow bigger.....in their nest cavities...the insects get bigger and dragonflies become the favored insect. Most insects are tossed and or bashed to get them in a favorable position for delivery or to squeeze out the stings. This was perhaps the biggest dragonfly I saw being tossed by the Blue-throated Bee-eater. Canon EOS1DX, ISO 1600, 500mm f4 lens, f8, 1/4000th second, beanbag Cheers Graeme |
