Hoatzin
Amazon Lowlands, Ecuador

Hi everyone,
I was so excited to spend time with this strange and unique species while leading nature photography workshops in Ecuador with Glenn Bartley earlier this year. Hoatzins are very common at the lodge we visit in the Amazon lowlands. Each morning and evening they could be seen clambering about the vegetation on the edges of lagoons during our paddling excursions. Did you know they use bacterial fermentation to break down the foliage that comprises nearly 100% of their diet, just like cows?!

I just posted a new blog entry highlighting a selection of the most beautiful and unique birds found in Ecuador, including several photos and facts.
Click here to check it out!
Best wishes,

Nailed it bro! Beautiful pose for this ancient-looking bird. The amount of fun-facts available for this species is mind-blowing ;)

Great image. Love the perch, pose, and BG. Well done.
You cannot save time, you can only spend it wisely, or perhaps, freeze a moment of it forever in a photograph

Beautiful and special. I would give some more space to the upper/right part of the picture.
