White-tailed Ptarmigan
(chick), Lagopus leucura
Cascade Mountains, British Columbia, Canada

Hi everyone,

Myself, Glenn Bartley and Connor Stefanison just returned from a short trip to the Cascade Mountains of southwest British Columbia. Our main targets were two of the chickens found in this region. Namely: Sooty Grouse and White-tailed Ptarmigans. We were successful in finding several of both species and had a great time photographing them in their beautiful, mountainous environments.

Having photographed adult White-tailed Ptarmigans several times before, I spent most of my time with the tennis ball-sized youngsters. I was amazed at how independent they were at such a young age, often straying 20 metres or more from mom, gleaning insects from the alpine vegetation. I was glad to be able to include some pink mountain heather in this shot; adding a splash of colour but also showing how tiny these guys are! Can't wait to get back into some great mountains with some great friends again.

Best of luck,

Thanks, James. Yes; usually one body, two lenses and a tripod along with the backpacking necessities. At this site we camped at around 1,800m or 5,900ft.

Nice. Love the comp and subject. Nice details and sharpness.
You cannot save time, you can only spend it wisely, or perhaps, freeze a moment of it forever in a photograph

Jess, outstanding image and as always, enjoy hearing your thoughts.  Excellent details on chick, super cute pose with that lifted foot, and neat habitat surrounds.

Love the deep green and the slanted rock. Eye contact would be ideal but I'd take this any day of the week. Fine job.
