She should come off the nest this weekend :)  Another pair on the same lake already had two young ones when she went on.

Steve, this is a lovely shot showing the bird and its habitat, while maintaining a respectable distance. Birds on their nests need to be treated with our utmost respect, and you've clearly followed that code of ethics. Well done!!!
Thanks for looking,

I like the comp. I agree about staying a respectable distance from these birds. Well done.

Steve, wonderful ruggedly natural setting and so well composed. The lady looks great - alert but peaceful, beautiful work.

One of the best nesting images of a Loon I have seen so far, Steve.

This nest is the highest out of the water I have ever seen!  Nicely done!

I monitored one that was almost as much out of the water many years ago and the chicks didn't survive as they couldn't get back up onto the next in the first two days.  Hope that doesn't happen with this one!

Hi Eleanor I visited the loons this morning there was one chick on the back of the mother. There were two eggs so who knows. They have used this nest for three years now. Another pair on the lake also likes to nest high up and exposed like this, as the lake has very little cottage pressure the three breeding pairs seem to do fairly well over the last eight years. One pair has a habit of coming up to the boat and dropping the young off by the boat then leaving the area for up to thirty minutes before coming back to feed them. They even flew off the lake this year leaving the three day old chicks with us.

Hi Steve, So glad to hear the loons have been successful at this nest site in previous years! After monitoring a high nest site for the whole incubation period and seeing both newly hatched chicks disappear was one of the most heartbreaking wildlife experiences I have ever witnessed. Sounds like you have a special relationship with the loons on your lake! I have had similar experiences here on my little lake. Thanks for your reply.
