I photographed these Great Blue Herons that were part of a very large colony on an island on the Mississippi River in North Minneapolis. The following spring, a tornado cut right through the island and wiped out all the eggs and chicks in several hundred nests. The adults were able to get away before the tornado hit and returned the next spring to nest again. I removed a couple of branches sticking up out of the nest I found distracting. Slight crop.
Canon 1D Mark IV, Canon 800mm lens and 1.4x giving me 1120mm of lens power, f/8, 1/1000th sec.

Lovely light and cool interaction. Shooting angle is a bit steep but I guess there was nothing you could have done about it. I usually stop down to f11 when using this combo and find the shots to be sharper.
