This Pied Kingfisher was photographed on the Sand River at Mala Mala private game reserve in South Africa. We were shooting the Cape Buffalo drinking from the river when I saw this kingfisher hovering overhead. Fortunately, I was able to capture it with wings fully extended, using my Canon 1D Mark IV and a super telephoto lens hand-held.
ISO 1250, 500mm, f/6.3 at 1/8000th
As I mentioned, I was set for some distant Cape Buffalo action in the river (some were running across the river) so I didn't have time to change my settings for this shot. I had not anticipated shooting up at the sky.
