Question: The histogram looks great; any tips on pulling a little feather detail out of the whites? (I'm using ACR and PS CS6)

Nice intimate shot, Craig!
Detail on white could be better though ...

A very nice portrait, a vertical would make this even better.

In answer to your question, if you have all ready pulled the highlight slider all the way to the left in ACR; you could use the brush with the highlight slider to further try to bring back detail. You could even use the brush again by clicking in a different place to start and paint over the same area as the first brush. In fact you do not have to use the highlight slider in the main panel if it wrecks the rest of the picture. Just use the slider in the brush panel.

Very nice portrait, I just love the patterns on the face of these birds, look like they've had eye makeup applied. The background here is pretty and I rather like the horizontal composition.
Another way you might get detail if you have Google-Nik filters is to use the Structure tool in Viveza.
