Canon 20D + 400mm f/4 DO lens @ 1/100, f/9, ISO 400

This photo is from June 2005, and I've posted this before way back then. But it's a photo that doesn't 'pop' unless you can see it fairly big - so with the new image post sizes that we're allowed now, I'm reposting it.

This was taken about 15kms outside of Jasper on the highway towards Edmonton. Right off the highway basically - all I had to do was climb down a 10 foot ditch, and slowly work my way about 30 feet to the shoreline. Amazingly enough, no other cars stopped to see what I was looking at.

I really enjoyed viewing this image full size. I'd print it and hang it.
Cheers from the Canadian west coast,

I love this type of shot, showing their habitat with clean surrounding.

wonderful use of space and composition. I love this shot. My one and only nit would be to use the content aware healing brush to take the blade of grass out of the further bird's head

Just outstanding, if it were mine, it would be on the wall.

Hey Matthew,
Yep, I did exactly that when I printed it nice & big to hang on my wall.

This photo won me the grand prize in Canadian Geographic Magazine's 2005 photo contest, but I couldn't edit it at all for the contest - and I decided to post the CG contest version here. This version has absolutely no edits, and just standard colour balancing in the PS Elements raw converter. Still can't quite figure out how the colours came out like that - just incredible lucky timing, as a storm came through just 10 minutes after this. 8)

Thanks for all the kind comments folks!

Hi Pete. Wonderful photo, great that you were able to get both loons together, and nicely positioned in the frame. Beautifully exposed and sharp. I may have taken a photo or two of these same loons back in '05, the location sounds right and I did photograph them right from the road as they nested (from a distance).
