What an amazing encounter on my SW Autumn Colors Safari in Colorado's San Juan Mountains yesterday.  After lunch in Telluride we were cruising south on 145 shooting color when a mother lynx and her two kittens crossed the road in front of us.  One kitten ran back - and that began ten minutes of amazing lynx photography and she crossed, and recrossed, the road attempting to get the kittens together. They make amazing sounds, kind of a guttural growl/snarl mix, when they called to each other. 35 years ago I saw a lynx in Glacier NP.  Lots of great images of her and the kittens. These lynx are so much bigger than the bobcats I am usually photographing in CA.  She got them back together and off they went.  In this image she is coming back towards the road for the lost kitten.

Nikon D3s body, 70-200 f2.8 VR2 lens, ISO 400, 1/1600 at f2.8, handheld, raw converted to jpg in CS6.

Pretty lucky and nice you were able to catch her...seems like the reintro of lynx is having limited success.

Any wild cat is an experience to see, much less photograph. Awesome.
