The shoreline is about half a mile from my house. We get regular visits from Smooth-coated Otters there, anything from a single otter to a family group of 9.
Sometimes they den in the rocks and you can smell their location. I staked out on place where I had seen then den in the past. Sure enough a pair came in from the sea and after a quick check of the surroundings they went into their temporary den

I local family member saw them and yelled to the others....look beavers!!!!!

Great shot/detail! Unusual to see the bodies of these otters revealed. Your hunch paid off well.

Lucky you to have such photogenic creatures so close to home Graeme! I love otters and this lovely image is just right to showcase their natural inquisitive nature. Very nice.

Graeme, What a great find! This image of an previously unknown species to me prompted me to look them up and find there are 13 species of otters world-wide, all basically endangered except our North American river otter. Thanks for the exciting image.

Neat poses and surroundings.
I was trying for river otters in Minnesota today, but did not get a shot of the 2 I saw. Like yours their area stinks too.
