This buck had just scent marked the thistle and was moving off to do whatever else they do as night approaches.  Would've like a bit of a head turn.  5DMKIII, 500/4 + 1.4xTCII, f5.6, 1/200s, ISO 6400, handheld from vehicle, cropped to just under 12 mp.

Lovely soft light and pretty setting. He really pops off the soft background. The head angle is good IMO as you can see both ears and both horns.

There is enough head turn to see the iconic head/horn detail, and the soft light enhances the sweet detail very nicely!

As you say, a little more head turn might be slightly better, but what you captured is not bad at all. Nice colors. I like the separation between the foreground and background and the tiny wildflowers
