A mere shrub separated me from this white rhino cow. Seeing how close you could get to them on foot with a camera, makes you realise that they don't stand a chance against the armed poaching gangs that are assaulting this species to sell their horns on the black market.

A red-billed oxpecker flutters over her head, looking for a place to perch next to its mate.

Techs:
Nikon D3s
Nikkor 500mm f4 VR-II
f7.1  |  1/1250 SS  |  ISO-900

A poignant photo, Morkel. I would be afraid to get this close, but your point is well taken. The birds are a great addition.

Very clever use of the elements in the frame with your title Morkel! The image does however show the extreme vulnerability of these poor creatures. A touch too dark for me and I would lighten the shot just a little.

A classic view well suited to B/W -- though at first glance it does seem a bit dark, it looks great with the dark surround of shadowbox.

Cool shot Morkel, like the bird flying in above it's head, a touch dark for me, would like to see it in color.

Thanks folks. Dark was actually what I went for given the sombre message.
As Gary said - clicking on the image to view in shadowbox makes it pop.

Not enough for some of us Morkel.  I view all images in shadowbox and this was still too dark for me.  8)

What I intended was that it looks much better on lightbox -- a little more shadow detail would be an improvement IMO. ;)

Ditto those thoughts.   Been there with the whites, so know where you are.

Very poignant. It does look better in the shadow box, I think the very dark tones and b/w conversion are fitting for the story telling aspect of the image.
