If I had to guess what is happening here I would say they were left behind when the tide went out and are waiting for the water to return.  Do tell us the story behind this image Nate - if only to solve the puzzle.   8)

Hi Carol,
They are in a freshwater pond that is covered with algae, these guys really like freshwater ponds and mud puddles, they are often in this particular pond that is always covered with red algae.

Nice sighting Nate. Glad Carol asked the question.... was a puzzle as they do look partially submerged, as confirmed by you. (initial look of the habitat just looks like normal ground...)

Thanks Nate, that is some thick algae!   I suppose this is their version of the Hippo wallow.   I will be able to sleep tonight now I know what's going on here! 8)    I just love nature and all her amazing idiosyncrasies!   :D
