Better viewed against a dark bg when you click on the image, a great story telling image Kevin.   It shows how just a part of the subject can illustrate this episode of the life cycle as it swims against the flow to find the spawning grounds!  Nicely done.

Hi Mike:   Thank you very much for the comment.   The river system that this fish is in has both hatchery rainbows and migratory steelhead.   This fish is most definitely a steelhead and likely a wild one given the location it was spawning.

Descendant from California fish (Mcloud River), steelhead were released in Michigan in the late 1800s and over the course of their tenure here, they have become genetically unique to this area.   These are now considered Michigan strain steelhead, also called Little Manistee strain steelhead.

Thanks for the info...I was going by the ragged dorsal fin to ID it as hatchery fish. McCloud strain fish were a mixture of rainbow and steelhead (also the strain which New Zealand got) and probably should be classed as alluvial fish since they don't go to the ocean. If my memory is accurate, the McCloud had a race of half pounders (summer steelhead) similar to the Klamath and Rogue. Obviously the strain doesn't exist in the wild anymore (Shasta Dam). Those Great Lakes do get impressive in size but being an Oregonian, I am a nitpicker when it comes to races of Steelhead. LOL
