Took this a while ago.  Whilst not showing this before, re-processing and re-visiting has produced what I felt was there on the day the image was produced.
(work on the micro contrast, face sharpening only, and no nr).

To recap, I was in Nakuru with a proper thunderstorm rolling in.  All of a sudden, several lions popped up from nowhere.  The lionesses went on a hunt.  This male is watching with intensity to see whether he needs to move and join a feeding frenzy.

techs were a D300 and 500 af-s at 1/100 F4 with a bean bag at 800 iso.  (that was challenging as the other two occupants insisted on moving around... like trying to take a picture on a rolling ship!!!!)

This is great. The lion looks worn and wild, and this image has an authenticity to it that I really appreciate.

You know by now that I love your work. You have a talent for capturing the very essence of the wildlife you photograph, and for giving a reel feel for their habitat and way of life. Your ride on the rolling ship has taken nothing away from this evocative and beautifully presented image. I can 'feel' him and I can smell him.

Superb shot Dave.

Dave, Your images from Nakuru from about 8 years ago made me go there in the first place. I love this image, just like your other ones from Nakuru. The Yellow Bark Acacias at that place make the most amazing backdrop/setting of any place in Kenya. Awesome image, Dave, love the wet look on the King and the sight of raindrops in the frame.

verily, it is so...  :D.   Nakuru, whilst not being the biggest reserve, has always been a pleasure to visit.  (I'm certain, there are more jewels to see there, so am planning to continue my periodic visits... 1st in 1994...  2nd in 02.  etc).  Been watching your progress too Marc.  Always a pleasure.
