Nice low angle, and good DOF.

Hi

Love the subject that blends so nicely into the surrounds - and a fine image!

I think perhaps I would have tried a more stopped down look, I think a little more frontal DOF would really have helped this superb critter shine

But either way a smashing shot well captured

All the best
Matthew

EDIT: For comparison of DOF at different f-stops of a similar scene, not reposts of same image as originally posted.

I played with that, but to keep the BG somewhat blurred out, f5.6 seemed to work best with a hard focus on the eye. Here are two shots taken with f5.6 for the first and f8 for the second. Notice the BG getting more distracting at f8:

Of course the angle of the Javelina is different, so f4 probably would have been better in this situation. Thanks for your input, Matthew, and all!

I think I like your first shot better Joe...I have a question. Are these critters expanding their range with global warming? It seems they can go much further north if they can take the cold of Bosque.

Nice one Joe, I like the sharp profile of the head and the natural habitat you included.

The additional shots are only for comparison of DOF at different f-stops in a similar scene taken a few minutes apart from the OP. They are not reposts.

The Javelina were never seen by me until about 3 years ago or so. I've been going to the Bosque since the 70's and photographing since 1989. They were usually farther south and west towards Magdalena and south around Deming and Lordsburg. At least that's my knowledge of them, so they do seem to be expanding their range. Bosque is really not that cold most of the time. This was the weather in December 2014:

and January 2015:

Not really as bad as some would have you believe.

Very nice image Joe, good look back pose with lovely complementary colour tones that set this little piggy off so well!
