Above the Arctic circle the sun goes below the horizon during winter, this photo was taken the very last hours of sunshine in 2013 in Tromsø, Norway. Sun returned 20 January 2014 :)  Humpbakc whales catching herring for supper before going to Bahamas for calving.

Welcome to Wildlife! Its always good to see different images from around the world and you have got off to a good start with the selection of shots you have introduced over the past couple of days. This is a fine story telling image showing the feeding behaviour of these wonderful creatures and I love the tiny herring flying through the air around those huge mouths - the ones who got away!

Nice warm back light and I also like the escaping fish.

Outstanding capture. The light and the pose are fantastic.
Although, it looks more like they're rolling on the sea laughing over a good joke. :)  I wasn't aware that wales eat other fish; I always thought they only feed on plankton.
A great photograph is absorbed by the eyes and stored in the heart.

Thanks for nice comments, the display of the Humpbacks is really a great show! And here they only eat herring it seems, tons are swallowed during the weeks and months they spend close to the coast of Tromsø.
Norway still hunts for minkies, not shure how large the quota but quite few boats take part in the whale meat business, most of them from Lofoten Islands a bit further south of us.
