I was out driving around in a snowstorm today looking for moose and found these three amigos. Notice that one of the moose is a young bull. This was on a logging road that soon will be designated a snowmobile trail. I'm gonna' have to switch from my 4 wheel drive truck to my snowmobile soon! Northern Maine.

D7100, 80-400mm, ISO 1100, F6.3 @ 1/400th sec., Skimmer pad from truck window

He's not stupid, is he!  Probably figures if he keeps in with the girls they might look favourably on him when he reaches  maturity and comes courting :D

A beautiful scene Mark to get all three like this in the falling snow.  A perfect Xmas card!

I was wondering how you would follow up on your gorgeous Moose in the mist winner, and you have pulled it off again with this superb  image.

Beautiful Mark!  I love the snowy moose scenes you share.

Edwin:  You should check out Mark's website.  In case you didn't know already he leads Photo Workshops in Northern Maine.  There's a ton up there to see and not just Moose!  Mark's a great guy and you'd have a blast.

I was talking to my wildlife biologist friend in the Florida panhandle and eyed this image in the right margin of NSN home page. I exclaimed....whoa! Then I told him of you, and Cecil Gray. He was surprised that a Maine Guide was on the yes side. It ain't over till it's over...and it ain't over :).

Another very unusual shot by you up there Mark. What a fantastic surprise when your headed down a woods road. I wonder why you were shooting your D7100 vs your D3S.

Reach Robert - I needed more than the D3S could do. The ISO was only 1100, and the D7100 can handle that O.K. Besides, it was snowing like hell and much more forgiving regarding noise in a photo under those conditions. Also I was happy enough that it could auto-focus at all under those conditions! Actually, it was no surprise to locate them, as I had been tracking many moose in that area in previous days. One particular day two weeks ago I recorded 22 different sets of moose tracks. I suspect most of them were active more at night, as I didn't see that many of them during the daylight hours. One day just before sunset I saw 5 bulls hanging out together in a clearcut, but it was way to dark and they were far away, so no photos. Since then we have received more snow and rain making traveling those logging roads by vehicle just about impossible. Besides, Dec. 15th starts the official snowmobile season, so most of those logging roads become official snowmobile trails which prohibit wheeled vehicles from passing on the groomed trails. I do have a snowmobile, so I will be able to go there soon, all be it a lot less comfy compared to my heated truck with bucket seats!
