Another shot from Chobe, Botswana. Maybe I should have titled this "Scarface" as it looks as though he's been in a few battles. Full frame, lens balanced on boat railing as low as I could go.

Nate this is brilliant! What a poser, smiling for the camera - and if he got you in the water he'd rip you to bits. Such detail and sweetest light. Superb shot. Don't you just love that sound a pod of hippos make when they're 'mumbling' together!

What excellent detail in this face. Love the light and the angle which gives you such a sweet blue background.

Lovely light and details here Nate. I too love lying in the base of the boat to get that low angle.

Hello Nate

Great closeup with excellent detail! Great lighting to show off his interesting facial features and scars from a veteran!

This is a creature that gets about zero press....and here you have just about elevated the hippo to center stage!!! Not only a great photo, but a poignant photo, and one that justly gives us a sense that here is an animal we all have long neglected. You have simply done a great service and enlightenment with your photo for this species. This is the best hippo photo I have ever seen .....thank you! He/she looks totally lovable! So seldom do we get such opportunities to make the lumbering giants appear cute and affectionate, but your image here succeeds magnificently!!!
