I took this image on our Namibia trip in 2012 and have always liked it but never gotten around to posting it. I was working on a project in which I am using it so it came back to my attention. This was taken in Etosha National Park at the Okakuejo waterhole where you can observe game after dusk as you are inside the camp gate looking out at the waterhole. As you can see from the techs there was very little light left at this point after the sun had gone down leaving some nice colors in the water. As I saw this Black-backed Jackal moving along I saw that I would be able to get it in the same frame as the shadow of the giraffe, this was the result.

This is so very unique as it is one of those rare moments in nature photography where the work is both creative and documentary in nature. The shadow of the giraffe and the framing really supports the movement of the canine (Jackal?), and also adds a sense of mystery to the whole image.

Hi Nate! Very artfully done image here. It really tells the story of the waterhole. I like the movement of the Jackal's legs, and I could totally tell that the silhouette in the reflection belonged to a giraffe. Nice!

Awesome, Nate! Beautifully done. This photo would not look out of place in the WPOTY competition.

Cool! I was wondering about the Giraffe's reflection; I thought, "that sure is a big bird!"
