An invasive species from the tropical Pacific, Lionfish (Pterois volitans) can now be found from North Carolina to throughout the Caribbean. They have a voracious appetite and may threaten the health of reefs by reducing populations of small fish responsible for keeping algae growth under control. Natural predators like sharks and large groupers have been fished out of most islands leaving the Lionfish populations to grow incredibly fast.
The long dorsal spines are quite poisonous and deliver a very painful jab. Nikon D3s, Aquatica housing, Inon strobes, 17-35mm @ 17mm, f8, ss 1/125, ISO 200. Stan
