An invasive species from the tropical Pacific, Lionfish (Pterois volitans) can now be found from North Carolina to throughout the Caribbean. They have a voracious appetite and may threaten the health of reefs by reducing populations of small fish responsible for keeping algae growth under control. Natural predators like sharks and large groupers have been fished out of most islands leaving the Lionfish populations to grow incredibly fast.
The long dorsal spines are quite poisonous and deliver a very painful jab.

Hi Stan. Unfortunate that these fish are thriving, but the image is really spectacular. I like the weird 45 degree angle view here, it really gives the image a feeling of movement, particularly when combined with that coral growing up and fanning out, along with the fins of the lionfish doing the same thing. Exposure and flash are right on ... well done!
