I went to Yellowstone in Feb of 2012.  I witnessed the most gut wrenching nature story live.  It took me until now to find the courage to go through my images and find one that would tell the story.  I wept as I watched a mother bison try tirelessly to help her sick calf back up on its feet.  Her pain and obvious distress was excruciating and I have never felt so helpless.  I had the option to turn away and hide, but I chose to fight my tears and try and document the story.  After hours of desperate attempts, she turned to the coyote who patiently waited nearby, and almost gave him the nod to move in.  She walked away with her head down.

A very poignant image Missy, how can anyone except the most heartless, fail to be moved by witnessing such an encounter. I think your image is a more than sensitive record of what unfolded here. Beautifully done.

It's a moment.  Not all moments are Disney moments, some are heart rending - but you did well to photograph it - moments like these tell the biggest stories, and make the most impact.

The story is in the picture; the stare of the coyote and the still open eye of the downed calf.

The story is so touching. Photography wise i see perfection, the eyes of both are creating such a powerful image.
I dare to say, maybe the pic of the year!

That's a great image Missy and thanks for sharing the story. At this point the coyote looks a bit sad to me as well. This is perfectly composed.

Missy,
Your story reveals the often brutal reality of nature's tug-of-war. Survival is the goal for each resident of this planet, and this means that there is always a winner and a loser in the food chain. I am sure that I too would struggle to watch the inevitable, but doubt that I could have maintained the composure to produce such a stunning image that evokes so much emotion.
well done!

Missy, I'm not sure I'd have been able to photograph this at all. Such a sad and moving story. The image is absolutely beautiful and touching, telling the story so perfectly.

We stumbled on the two when the calf was still on its feet.  There was a slow trickle of blood coming from a wound around its stomach.  I thought it may have been an attempted kill that just injured the calf.
