After spending many summers with these cool animals I am convinced that for the most part the flies do NOT bother them. Occasional ear twitches and head shakes are all I see. The flies on the velvet seem to have no effect. The Winter Tick which attaches in the Fall by the thousands is the "predator" that kills Moose in large numbers. As the climate has ebbed and flowed across the Northern range the ticks have evolved to become stronger in their reproductive process. Moose die offs have become alarming. The particular Moose in this photo has not been affected and the ones in this surrounding area seem to be clean as well. Fingers are crossed and hope for Moose populations is holding its breath. Maine's Dept. of Fish and Game is not helping matters either with their continued high permit numbers.
