Elephants are one of my favorite subjects to photograph while in Africa. While some find that seeing them becomes routine during a safari, I am endlessly intrigued by their bodies, texture and behavior. The young ones remind me of human toddlers as they are a bit awkward in their movements (trunks and ears in particular), and they exhibit a bravado around their mothers that is comical.

This pair were at a watering hole have a drink when the baby decided it wanted to charge an adolescent bull at least 5-times its size. Seeing that the bull was nearly half as large as the babe's mother, nothing came of the folly.

Very nice pose of the calf and including its mother gives a good idea of its size.

I find the whole family structure and behaviour fascinating Bruce, and like you, I just love to watch the youngsters with attitude! So adorable at this tender age and so well protected by their herd members.
