Northern Pacific Rattlesnake, Crotalus oreganus oreganus
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada

Hi everyone,
I recently photographed this beautiful Northern Pacific Rattlesnake at a den site in BC's Okanagan Valley. This species, in addition to three of our other snakes are found only in the province's dry, south-central valleys, making this region ecologically truly special. Having worked here in the biology field during previous summers, I always love returning to some of my favourite haunts, especially when it means encountering these beautiful creatures!
Hope you enjoy.
Best wishes!

Jess,
This is a great subject and applaud your bravery as I'm not sure I could be that close to a rattler w/ a 70-200 lens.
I like the tight crop but think that the image might be stronger if the head were not centered. When I reframe the image with a hand crop & place the head a little lower in the left quadrant, my eye follows the snake's body and returns to the head. As it stands, my eye starts at the head but gets lost in the foreground regions of its body.

regards,
bruce

Rather you than me Jess, but then I'm a sissy when it comes to snakes ... A 500mm with a converter on would be fine.

A nice view of that distinctive broad head and the markings Jess, it would be good to see the rattle as well but I assume you got some shots including that.

Jess

Indeed a shot to admire....as mentioned I would use an 800mm and a 2x converter.
