Today is World Lion Day...
World Lion Day is an independent campaign working to highlight the importance of the lion globally and to raise lion conservation awareness worldwide.

"Saving the King of Beasts to Save Ourselves"
For more info on the initiative: www.worldlionday.com

Lion numbers in the wild have plummeted drastically in the last 100 years. As Dereck Joubert, filmmaker of the film The Last Lions and director of Great Plains Conservation, puts it: "A hundred years ago we think there were over a million lions. When I was born, maybe 450,000 lions roamed these plains. Today we niggle over if there are 20,000 or 35,000 lions left and forget to look over our shoulders at history."

As long as the so called superior, intelligent human race continue to inflict atrocities on each other - what chance does wildlife stand Morkel?  We can only hope that each of these drop in the ocean conservation awareness campaigns starts a trend in the right direction that becomes a flood.

Thanks for reminding us with this handsome boy and his evocative expression.

Hi Morkel,

Very informative post with a great shot of this male. Love the light and the complementary bg on this one.

Maybe one day, i will have the opportunity to photography such a beautiful animal instead of marmots...

Great shot. Wonderful pose.

I hope NGOs like the Big Cat Initiative or Panthera (my favorite cat NGO and part of the initiative) can save the world's cats like Lions, Pumas or Tigers.
