Stealthy Stare ( Canis lupus )     Gray Wolf

From ARCHIVE

While lying prone & very still over a lengthy encounter , this wolf appeared from behind a tree for a few moments, allowing me to  capture a few images.

There was a reported Moose kill and I staked out over a few days this wolf pack. My campsite was about 1 mile away & I would leave my stake out only after it was too dark to Photograph. I could hear them each evening communicating within their closed pack .

Fuji S5/ Nikon 200-400mm @ 600mm (using the crop factor)
Some cropping here
1/80 speed to achieve an ISO of 100 (Holding my breath)
F4,  Hand Held while lying in the foliage

Comments & critique appreciated.

I find the body crop a little awkward here Bill and personally would cut most of the body off and concentrate on a closer vertical of that wonderful face. The so expressive eyes are captured beautifully and are really the stars of the show, so the right half of the shot has it all!

What a great experience and job getting this shot Bill. Nice job with the low light, although I probably would have bumped my iso a bit to get more speed. The face is nice and sharp.

What I like about this is that it speaks to the elusive nature of this animal, peeking out from the foliage and tree trunk. I agree with Carol's comments on the body- I'm thinking a square-ish crop taking off from the left would be more pleasing.

An image full of drama!
Love those deep eyes and the nice habitat.

Bill, such a perfect, intimidating stare - the eyes make the image! In fact, the stare conveys the feeling of wilderness to me!

thanks very much for the excellent feedback. the grey wolf is very maligned and still hunted for sport.
