Whilst reviewing my last foray with the deer herds, on many occasions I noticed the Flehmen response.  (Normally, I wear camouflage clothing just to give me that few extra yards before they become agitated, and also to keep me warm and dry).

THIS I HAVE TO SHARE.  so hilarious.  males when they are in the rutting season, will often curl their upper lip in the Flehmen pose,.  There lies a gland: (deer have seven that we know, maybe more).  The Vomeronasal gland is normally used to determine the reproductive condition of females.  Usually by introducing urine onto the gland.  (many other species do likewise).

My friends, I swear to you there are no romantic aspirations between this fella and me!!!!   However, in life, we do know a few youngsters that have early hormone rushes!!   don't we just love our children.

Techs were a Nikon D800 and 500 AF-S II lens.  (mounted on a Gitzo 1548 and Wimberley.).

I love your use of selective focus here Dave with the crisp sharpness of that classic expression, the bright eyes and the fronds of bracken popping so nicely from the damp, misty habitat.

A superb image IMO, enhanced beautifully and dramatically by the black and white presentation.

Love it!

thanks for all your kind words.  (and humour)....  apparently, the deer don't have fantastically good eyesight and have loads of glands used for mapping out their territory by smells.  Sort of talking with their noses...

This is lovely Dave, I love how the selective focus and b/w conversion have simplified the image. Very evocative.
