I found a fair number of these garter snakes congregated on some canal side rocks, basking in the very last rays of the day.  7D, 700mm, F/8, 1/1000, ISO 400, beanbag.  Thanks for any comments or suggestions Dave

Great color and love the coil. I think it might be more effective without the tail in the image

Hi

I think you have executed the shot well and captured good details and good colourations although being highly critical I feel you could have used a bit more frontal DOF – but mostly it is the composition that is not really working that well for my tastes. Basically everything within the image leads the eye right, and right out of the frame, even the shadows are enforcing this flow, making the left side of the shot rather unimportance. So without an aspect within the shot acting as a full stop of leading line left, I am with Richard in believing that a stronger more balanced looking composition would have resulted in the opposite positioning of the subject – but either way a well captured image that certainly has its charms

All the best
Matthew

As the tail is cut off anyway I would be tempted to come in much closer from the left side and concentrate more on just the main coil of this handsome specimen. The colours are lovely and there is perfect harmony between subject and setting.

Nice comp and a beautiful snake. I see what some of the others are saying but breaking the rules once in a while keeps things interesting.

This shows the pretty colors and patterns of this snake. I think I'm with Carol on the crop suggestion here.
